My Project

A calming area is an important tool to have in the library for students who need to de-escalate and regain emotional and physical control.

Our elementary school library already has a bare alcove that could be transformed into the perfect calming area.

The addition of soft furniture such as bean bag chairs and floor cushions, would turn the nook into safe space for students to practice mindfulness techniques and help regulate their emotions. Including options for quiet activities such as mindful coloring books and headphones would further help students calm.
