This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a 1st year School Social Worker at RES and have tried to setup a calming area for the students going through dysregulation. I am remarkably happy to work with the students at RES and only want to provide a positive location where they can regulate their emotions. The Calming Area can be a place where students have welcoming furniture, engaging media, and fun manipulatives to help support their distress and improve their school performance.

The Calming Area provides a place of healing and learning where students can learn about emotional self-regulation and practice it for themselves.

From the tangible, fidget objects to the visual media posters, the items to be used in the calming corner will encourage students to be self-sufficient in managing emotions by practicing supportive interventions. Self-regulation interventions like deep breathing, feeling identification, activity selection, and relaxation will allow the students to feel emotionally supported and capable of resolving their own emotional conflicts as they occur. This project will be able to teach students socio-emotional skills they will need for the rest of their lives.
