This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a school social worker at multiple sites, I am dedicated to supporting the socio-emotional wellbeing of all students. Upon returning to in-person learning after the pandemic, our students have shown how resilient they can be, yet they are also fragile and need reassurance, acceptance and support in manage difficult emotions.

By creating a calming area with the products that I have selected, I seek to create an accepting environment where students feel safe, comforted, and nurtured.

Sitting in a comfy bean bag and/or holding a weighted stuffed animal on the carpet can be soothing. Reading affirmation statements and books on feelings can be validating. Utilizing sensory calming toys and having poster reminders of healthy coping strategies can be engaging, calming, and can encourage positive choices. Together, these products can create a positive atmosphere in which students are more likely to engage in accepting guidance and utilize strategies that support them in returning to a calm learning state.
