Our school is in a health and nutrition school in a city district of New York. The school serves grades pre-kindergarten through three. We are a tight-knit school where the students love to be in school. The students need fun and engaging activities to foster their love of learning at a young age.
Many of them may not have access to these experiences at home, so I want to provide that for them in the classroom.
Many of my students come from immigrant homes where English is not the first language. This has not hindered their enthusiasm and curiosities. They have questions and ideas but are always in need of resources for inspiration and reference.
My Project
Have you ever marveled at the sight of an aquarium? Aquariums are wondrous additions to any environment and a classroom would be a fantastic place for them to be! We have been adding aquariums throughout various classrooms of our school.
Our intervention room where counseling, speech therapy, occupational and physical therapy meets wish to have an aquarium for their room!
These students meet in this room to work on individualized needs and imagine how calming an aquarium would be! They say that animals help destress students and our school counselor mentioned that an aquarium would be especially beneficial for her students during her sessions!
These materials will be used to supplement the fish tanks we already have. We currently have available fish tanks but are missing materials to fill them! We would need substrate for plant life, decorations, and air pumps to help aerate the water.
What a great way to (literally) bring life to these studies with real life animals! Students will be able to experience for themselves how certain aquatic animals eat and move. It will make their learning richer by allowing them to see it for themselves! Students will also learn a great deal about the responsibility of caring for a living thing!
