I am lucky to spend my days with 27 energetic, inquisitive first graders. My school is a mix of low to middle class income with approximately one third of the students receiving free or reduced price lunch. We also have a program called Blessings In A Backpack, where a backpack of food is sent home for students in need every Friday.
Calming Corner Needed!
My students need sensory materials to use in our calming space in our classroom. The vibrating pillow, weighted lap pads and blankets and light covers are soothing.
My Students
Many of my students struggle with self regulation and impulse control skills, and we are working on taking "brain breaks" to help them prevent inappropriate behaviors. The students are learning that different sensory objects help to regulate their behaviors.
My Project
The materials will be used on a daily basis in our classrooms calming corner. My students are able to use the calming corner to regroup and take a break to get themselves calm and ready to learn. They are still able to hear instruction however, are in an area with items to help them learn to regulate their emotions.

Some kids just need something to hold onto like a fidget to keep them focused, or some wiggling bodies would benefit from a weighted blanket to help them focus on a lesson or to help calm them if they are feeling anxious.
These supplies will be used as tools in our classroom to help when someone may need a minute to breath and take a couple of minutes to regroup and learn that sometimes people need a few minutes to get their emotions under control so they can get back to learning!
