This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I love my job because I have the opportunity to work with intelligent, caring and empathetic, young people every day. Each day, I witness our students push themselves and one another, to be better versions of themselves which is a joy to witness.
Our children deserve the world and each day these students are taking steps to better understand the world around them and what that they desire for themselves and their community.
As the Director of Culture for Pre-K to 2nd Grade, I am extremely fortunate to work with little people who are learning who they are and how to relate with others. Through an anti-racist lens, our young children are learning about and creating a world that is inclusive and equitable for all.
My Project
My office is the hub of anti-bias and restorative practices for Pre-K-2 at our school. This space is used to teach young people about identity, social-emotional skills, proactively address conflict, and problem-solve around issues that may have disrupted daily learning.
All of our students deserve a space where they can unapologetically be themselves and that is what my space has been designed for.
The books in this project reflect the identities of our students and their families. It is integral that students see representations of themselves in texts and these books were intentionally chosen to do so.
Working with students that have experienced significant trauma, having an outlet for them to get their frustrations or negative energy out can be extremely beneficial during the school day. I firmly believe that some of our students when escalated could benefit from using the sensory objects to calm down and provide them a sense of comfort.
The beanbag chairs will provide a comfortable alternative to traditional seating. Adding these seats to the space will be great for holding circles, collaborating on group work, and when participating in mindfulness exercises.
Contributing to my space will aid in creating a comfortable environment for students to express all emotions and develop the emotional intelligence they need to thrive in school and their home life.
