We are a magnet school for aeronautical and children's engineering.
About 65% of our students come from poverty and over 20 different languages are spoken in the school.
We also have high mobility, meaning children move in and out of our school quite frequently. This often leaves large gaps in learning.
My classroom is a rainbow of diversity in terms of culture, race, and ability. They love to learn and embrace new challenges every day. They like to try new things and love technology and science.
My Project
As educators, we ask a lot of our students. They work hard every day to rise to the challenges we put before them. Research tells us that students who are calm and in control of their bodies will be more ready to learn.
It is important to recognize that even though they are able to do the work, that these are still 6- and 7-year olds, with 6- and 7-year old emotions and a strong need for movement.
I would like to create a "calm down" corner for my classroom. This space would include a bean bag chair, a light therapy lamp, and calm down tools like fidgets, an emotional regulation book, and calm down timers.
Even when first graders are in control of their emotions, they still have lots of "wiggles." Kore Kids Wobble Chairs and elastic kick bands for chairs will allow students to wiggle while maintaining productivity. An area rug will be used to help keep stools and chairs in place, helping to avoid chairs from tipping over when students inevitably rock on them.
