Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a Title I school located on the west side of Chicago. Although the students experience many challenges living in a high-crime, low-income neighborhood, they walk through our doors where they experience a sense of belonging in welcoming and safe classroom communities. My classroom is filled with 30 five and six year olds who are eager to learn.
My hope as an educator is to foster the students' curiosities and love for learning.
It all begins with establishing a strong and supportive community as we focus on building relationships with each other.
My Project
A lot is expected of kindergarten students in the academic setting! My students attend a full day of school that is packed from arrival to dismissal with social-emotional learning, literacy, math, science, social studies, P.E., music, technology, and art!
With the help of Donors Choose, I am requesting a few classroom resources so that my wonderful five and six year old students will be calm and ready for learning.
I am requesting kick bands and wobble cushions for students who are more active. Both the kick bands and wobble cushions provide some students with the sensory input they need. They also allow students to quietly wiggle while learning, helping them focus and pay attention. Research shows that wiggling/fidgeting can benefit attention and energy by allowing minds to better focus on the task at hand.
In addition, I am requesting a variety of fidgets for my classroom “Calm Kit”. I have a designated space in my classroom where students choose to go when they are experiencing big feelings, positive and/or negative. This space provides them with time to calm down and/or cool off. We have been developing strategies/coping techniques to help regulate emotions so that students experiencing big emotions are able to successfully return to instruction ready to learn.
Not only would the addition of fidgets be beneficial to the “Calm Kit”, but also an assortment of sand timers. The sand timers provide students with a visual representation of how much time they select to spend in the calm spot before they are expected to rejoin the class. The timers with a greater amount of time would be a wonderful addition to the classroom by providing students with visual parameters for the time allotted during specified activities.
