My students need 6 noise cancelling headphones to help be calmer and focused when they learn. They need light filters to soften the harsh glare of lights.
Ours is an urban elementary school in St Paul. We are a neighborhood school serving mainstream students as well as many bilingual students who are learning English. Some of my students have recently arrived in the United States and did not have an opportunity to attend school before. About 86% of our students receive free and reduced lunches.
Our learning classroom is a general education classroom with many children learning English as a second language.
My First Graders come ready to learn every day. They are a great group of Super Learners. Everyone is so proud of themselves and others when math concepts and/ or reading levels are mastered. All First graders work hard every day to be responsible, respectful, safe learners.

Every day I want to meet social and emotional needs of all my students. Research shows us the basic needs must be met so children can learn.
Noise cancelling headphones will provide equity and give everyone an opportunity to learn.
I teach my children strategies to help them regulate themselves. One strategy is to calm your body and mind. The use of the noise cancelling headphones will increase many students ability to focus and be more engaged in their learning. Children will be able to focus during individualized learning. One educational strategy that provides equity in the classroom is making sure I provide resources for all my students' needs so they are successful.
Many of my students ask to wear noise cancelling headphones but I only have one set of these in my classroom. Many of my students need to decrease the amount of auditory input so they can be focused learners. I have seen how this simple tool has helped many of my students to be able to focus and increase their learning.
I also need Fluorescent Light Filters. Researchers have found that Fluorescent Light can cause children to decrease their ability to focus. The filters eliminate all fluorescent light glare which makes the room a calmer environment.
