Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a beautiful, yet socio-economically disadvantaged school in California. I am a kindergarten teacher and I truly believe educational and social success begins in kindergarten.
Our school is a Title I school with a majority of the families receiving free or reduced rate lunch.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds and have many different social-emotional needs. When designing my classroom, my goal is to create a warm, aesthetically beautiful, and inviting environment that will make students want to come to school each day.
My Project
I often think about what I would do if I won the lottery and one of the first things I would do is create a place in my classroom for flexible seating. I would not only use it as an alternative area for learning to take place but also as a calm area of the classroom where my students can go when they need some peace, are feeling sad, or just having a bad day.
I have been teaching for over 20 years now, but I will always try anything that will help a child learn.
Flexible seating areas allow students to feel comfortable in their learning environment.
It allows the student to stay vested in the task at hand and their behavior becomes equally positive. It creates a natural social atmosphere of working and learning with others. I have humbly requested two beanbag chairs in very calming colors, a park-like bench, and some adorable soft "tree stump" seats to create a peaceful park-like setting.
