This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are pre-school to first graders in a self-contained supported learning classroom. They are a very diverse group of learners, with physical and cognitive disabilities that require a smaller classroom setting.
They deserve the best, and I try each day to deliver just that!
Despite any limitations they may face, my students are an enthusiastic group of children that love to try new things and get very excited when we get to introduce something new. I have a friendly, outgoing class that is eager to learn and a joy to teach!
My Project
A classroom should be a safe and warm environment for every child that enters. I want my students to love our classroom!
I'd like to provide a sensory friendly classroom that encourages learning and exploration, while supporting communication and development.
To provide a sensory friendly classroom for my students, I've chosen a nature theme full of colorful owls that will provide a visual cohesiveness across the classroom. My students are easily overstimulated. The handful of happiness book, essential oils and diffuser will be a natural way to keep our air clean and encourage peace and calming. Most of the students in my class are non-verbal. The PECS (picture exchange communication system) items and the sign language workbook will encourage expressive communication and good behavior choices. Child friendly materials like the headphones, staple free stapler, bendable pencil and stretchy fidgets lend themselves to providing a safe environment for my students. The folders, magnets and other items will allow me to provide a calm and organized classroom for my children.
