I teach a self-contained special education classroom where students have a wide range of abilities and disabilities. All of my students are classified with a developmental or cognitive disability, but that does not slow them down from doing their best. I teach at a Title I school in Tennessee where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
My students are in grades Kindergarten through 4th grade, and spend many years with me so I really get to know what they need to perform their best learning.
We use a modified curriculum that teaches grade level content at their level of understanding.
My Project
My students get excited after playing outside. One of the most effective ways I have found to get their brains ready for learning again is with 10 minutes of yoga. At first, they didn't like it and struggled to do the poses. Now they like to copy what they see on the videos we show.
We found some kid friendly yoga videos and the kids follow along but sometimes bump into each other and don't have a full awareness of the space they need and other classmates around them.
These yoga mats will support the calmness and focus that yoga creates by giving students their own space to complete the poses. Each student can have their own mat and we can wipe them down with Clorox wipes afterwards.
The weighted balls will be used with individual students who need deep pressure to their joints. A therapist came in and worked with a few sensory seeking students and under supervision and guidance, using these weighted balls helped calm them by providing the sensory feedback they are seeking in an appropriate way. The headphones will be used with our various technologies and will allow a calmer classroom reducing the noise from iPads and tablets. The combination of these items will allow the students to learn in a calm and healthy environment.
