My Students
Our school is located in the inner city of Milwaukee. We are a neighborhood school serving about 310 students from 4-year-old-kindergarten to 5th grade. The vast majority of our students receive free/reduced lunch and are considered low socioeconomic families.
Our students come to school with many experiences that make it hard for them to utilize strategies to self-regulate their emotions.
We would like to provide them with opportunities and strategies to be mindful and reflective. We are hoping to change the way that students deal with stress, disappointment, and conflict by providing them space and time to practice calm-down strategies in school.
My Project
Students in high trauma situations, like our students, have trouble knowing how to calm themselves down. With the materials for a calm down room, students will be able to use the boogie boards to reflect and draw, watch the calming lights, and listen to relaxing music on the new CD player.
Students will be able to sit or lay down on the carpet or the bean bags and pillows in a softer light and use fidget toys or watch the fish in the aquarium to help them feel calm.
Students will be able to reflect on their situation and think calmly about their actions and feelings. Students who are calm and relaxed are more apt to learn new things.
