Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Simply put, my students are incredible! They are resilient beyond measure, kind, and persevere. They would inspire anyone who gets to know them.
My students come from social-economically diverse backgrounds and many are spoken to in a language other than English when they are at home.
They come to school ready to learn and socialize with their friends, just like all kids everywhere. Many of my students face social and emotional challenges, however, such as neuro-cognitive differences, reading and math disabilities, difficulties regulating their emotions, trauma, community violence, loss and in some cases, abuse.
As a school social worker, my job is to help them learn the skills they need to deal with their emotions and communicate their needs and feelings in a calm, effective and direct way.
My Project
My project will provide five "Calm Down Kits" for each of my two schools that I support. Sometimes my students become extremely upset after an altercation with another student or a teacher. Sometimes they don't understand what is being asked of them due to their neuro-cognitive differences such as autism, and they become extremely agitated and may be acting out of control by yelling, kicking, throwing items, or hitting. When this happens, students are brought to me or a school administrator such as a Dean, Counselor or Principal, to calm down, talk about what happened, reflect on what went wrong, and figure out how to make things right.
When students are extremely upset and emotional they aren't ready to talk.
My project would provide them with the opportunity to use the items in the Calm Down Kits to help them to calm down-- brain teasers, sensory items, drawing supplies and building materials-- so that they can talk about what happened and learn from the incident. The items inspire curiosity and appeal to a students' senses. They will allow a student to distract and soothe themselves so they can get to a place emotionally where they are ready to process what happened.
