My students need resources for a "Calm Down Kit" to help refocus themselves after a stressful or frustrating situation. They need noise canceling headphones and a storage tote to hold all the resources.
Welcome! Our south Minneapolis elementary school has a diverse population of students ranging from early childhood to fifth grade. Many of our students have experienced homelessness, lack of basic resources and childhood trauma. A lot of our students have been to multiple schools and have lived in many different homes already at their young ages.
Despite these extreme circumstances, our students show up daily to learn and build lasting relationships with peers and staff.
Our students are caring, intelligent and inquisitive students who deserve the best we can offer.
My Project
Many students at my school have experienced homelessness, lack of basic needs and/or traumatic events. Due to these experiences, we often see an increase in anxious or aggressive behaviors when stressful or frustrating situations occur.
By providing students with an area and resources to calm down, we are teaching them the appropriate social skills needed to be successful students and learners.
These skills will be valuable in overcoming the challenges life brings.
My project includes fidgets which are good for calming anxious bodies, noise canceling headphones and storage containers for every classroom in my school. Every teacher and student will be taught how to use these "Calm Down Kits," and they will be available in an accessible location within each classroom to be used at any time needed.
