My students need a diffuser, essential oils, aromatherapy candles and a candle warmer, a calming down nook, a punching pad for fists and feet, and a bluetooth calm lighting lamp.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
An average day in my classroom includes students engaging with each other in authentic ways. I implement whole brain teaching and utilize muscle memory learning techniques. Collaborating to dig deeper into content happens daily. Students are exposed to technology and are taught valuable computer skills. They are able to explain their thinking and work through screencasts, Google Classroom, video chats and much more.
I teach between 30 and 40 of the most resilient children.
MES is a Title I school where all students are offered both free breakfast and lunch. It is located in an impoverished area. Kids come to school empty-handed, often unable to provide their own supplies for the year. Many of these kids have experienced traumas at an incredibly young age that are beyond what I can even fathom.
My Project
My students have experienced significant trauma in their short lives. It is my goal to continue to create a classroom environment that is soothing and that creates a feeling of security. Essential oils and aromatherapy candles are said to help calm people. Using a diffuser in the calm down cove would be really effective. My students can also be aggressive when working through their anger. Due to this, I'd like to provide them with pads to both punch and kick to get all of that energy out on an object meant for that. The seat can provide a place to put the candles and diffuser and other materials used in the calm down cove while also providing a place for students to sit. The lamp will provide calming color changes while also creating an opportunity to play instrumental music or nature sounds. I'd really like to provide my students with an area they can escape to when they really need it.
