My students need a safe place in the room to calm down and regulate their emotions. They need a rug to be able to sit on and use their calming strategies, instead of the hard floor.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students come into our school everyday full of excitement and eagerness to learn each with their own unique abilities. We are considered a Title 1 low-income school, where every child receives free breakfast and lunch. Our school community is very diverse and full of amazing learning opportunities for our students. 91 percent of our students are high needs, 63 percent being economically disadvantaged.
Every student in my classroom is learning English as their second language.
Over 80 percent of our students do not speak English as their first language. Although the majority of our student's first language is Spanish, we also have a large population of students who speak Arabic, Twi, Portuguese, and Albanian. We are the only school in Worcester who has a bilingual education program, where students receive instruction in Spanish while receiving support in English.
My Project
Students need a safe place to regulate their emotions to be successful learners. Every classroom should have a specific area where young learners can take time to learn coping skills in order to calm down. When a student becomes upset, they will be allowed to take a few minute break in the chill zone where the emotion rug, flexible seats and fidgets will be. These materials along with visual supports and taught strategies will help the student calm their minds and be able to get back to work.
Young students can become very frustrated in the academic and social setting, a chill zone promotes healthy strategies and tools to calm down and regulate their emotions.
After visiting the chill zone, the students will have a clear and calm mind that is ready to learn! Our job as educators is to provide the supports necessary for our students to feel safe and open to learn. A chill zone in my classroom would provide emotional support for students in need as well as teach them life long skills.
