I teach children who have Autism and are in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. They are exceptional children who need extra support in their learning of academics and social behavior. They navigate life differently and I am there to help support the skills they lack.
My students are inspirational each and every day and deserve the same respect as their peers.
They struggle to be understood and I strive daily to find ways for them to be accepted and flourish in our school.
My Project
My students have many needs that come with their learning. They need help with keeping calm and focusing when things happen that are out of their control. Sensory input can become overwhelming, the material can become too difficult, and the time required to focus and sit still can all make for a difficult learning environment for my students along with their peers.
These calm down boxes will give my students an area IN their classroom where they can go for a short amount of time to decompress and calm down and then begin to learn again.
When they are progressing through my program they spend more time in class and less time with me. This however is difficult when they need the services of my room still. This will help bridge the gap and allow my students access to their general education classroom more regularly.
