Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school community is part of the NYC public school special education program. We are part of a self-contained program that services children with multiple disabilities that vary in severity. We have two Kindergarten through third grade 12:1:1 classrooms that are comprised of students that are passionate, caring, energetic and full of determination. They come into school each morning ready to learn with smiles on their faces, despite the many challenges they are facing in life.
Our students have exceptional needs such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Emotional Disturbance (ED), Down Syndrome and other Specific Learning Disabilities that affect learning.
Our school is a Title 1 school with a low socio-economic status. Over 90% of the students at this school qualify for free and reduced lunch.
I work in an urban NYC Public school setting where the students are over 90% in the poverty level and come from difficult backgrounds.
Our students need a quiet space when they are upset, frustrated or anxious in class. This will consist of mats, seating, sensory items, lycra blankets, weighted vests, weighted blankets, noise cancelling headphones, calming books and visuals aids.
My Project
Classroom Calming areas allows students to take time to recognize their big emotions and find the healthiest way to handle them by selecting/implementing a strategy of choice. Self-regulation is a life skill that students must work on to become successful lifelong learners and positive members of a community. The calm down area is for students who need a break, because they are frustrated or anxious. It is also used for students who have PTSD/ ED to de- escalate when they have become aggressive or angry. The bean bag chairs, weighted blankets, noise cancelling headphones and other sensory items can also be used as sensory stimulation for students with Autism and sensory issues.
Throughout the day, students may encounter tasks or interactions that overwhelm and frustrate them.
Students may also feel a wide range of emotions during the day that could lead to negative behaviors when they're unsure of how to address or express their emotions. When these feelings take over, many students struggle with self-regulation and the use of coping strategies. The goal is to help our exceptional students understand how to use the different tools and sensory items such as putty, stress balls as well as books and visuals with calming strategies when they are experiencing overwhelming emotions and rejoin the learning environment in a timely fashion. Students learn best when they feel safe, accepted, supported, and loved. That's why it is important to help students with self-regulation. We want our students to know that we care about every part of them, their emotions, fears, and frustrations.
By donating towards our classrooms, you will help create a stable and safe learning environment for special needs students. The Calming Corner is a positive place that rewards students for keeping their emotions in check and using strategies to calm themselves down.
