Calm Corner and Self Care Station for Middle School Scientists
My students need access to granola bars, a first aid kit, ice packs, and deodorant. My students also need flexible seating options such as adjustable stools to allow themselves to be more comfortable during science class.
My students come from very diverse backgrounds and are extremely hardworking. I am amazed by the hard work that they put in on a daily basis.
Despite the many challenges they may face, my students are eager to learn new things, ask questions, and conduct experiments.
We are located in the San Antonio District, east of Lake Merritt, and our demographics reflect those of our neighborhood with approximately 35% Latino, 44% Asian, and 18% African American students. Many of our students have immigrated to the United States, and many more will be the first in their family to attend college. Approximately 40% of our students are English Language Learners, and over 94% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch programs.
My Project
Middle school can be rough for many students especially with all of the changes that come with puberty. Sometimes my students come to class hungry from not having eaten breakfast or lunch. Our school has classes that are approximately 80 minutes long and my students often get antsy and restless in their afternoon classes. This upcoming school year, I am hoping to find ways to better meet the basic needs of my students by setting up a calm corner in my classroom. I also plan to try to make my classroom more comfortable by including flexible seating options. Students will be able to access the calm corner if they need a place to decompress for a few minutes. I plan to include a self care section where students can access bandaids, ice packs, a heating pad blanket, deodorant, as well as other fidgets. In addition, I would also like to be able to offer students who have not eaten all day granola bars.
The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them the opportunities to choose different seating options and by providing them with the opportunity to self advocate for what might help them focus better in class.
Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. The wobble stools are adjustable and will allow students to sit at tables but will still allow some movement. These will be extremely beneficial for some students that just need to move around especially during our 80 minute class periods.
I'd love to see how providing my students access to these materials could positively affect my students’ demeanor and help them to learn more effectively if their basic needs are met.
