Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in an urban district where the majority of our students qualify for free and reduced-price breakfast and lunch. We have regular education classrooms that include ESL students, Special Education students, and students from a variety of economic backgrounds.
Our students come to school every day ready to learn and eager to be engaged.
They put forth their best effort every day and are active participants in their own learning. We are continually looking for new ways to keep them invested in their education.
My Project
There are select classrooms in our building that have a dedicated cool down corner equipped with a cool down kit. Our students know that this area of the classroom is reserved as a safe space to take deep breaths, fidget with sensory tools, and de-escalate from stressors and conflicts. Students have a challenging time when they are preoccupied with strong emotions or overstimulated. The cool down center is a space for students to take a break from their classroom and come to self regulate. My calming or cool down corners in the classroom represent a safe place for students to go to when they feel overwhelmed with social and emotional situations. It is also used for students have a designated break time throughout that day where they come and just take a break to ensure success in their academic classroom. Cool down kits contain sensory items that need to be replaced regularly due to wear and tear.
The items I have selected will support the student as they get ready to return to learning mode.
I am also looking to set up a more calming space. Here the relaxing bubbles and fish will help set their minds at ease while sitting comfortably in their cool down chairs. In my corner there are also posters to help them identify their feelings at that particular moment. The student will also find fidgets and a choice of activities to help them cool down and be able to go back to learning. The sandboxes, legos, stress balls, and other items will be used to give them choice that fit their personal needs. Please help complete our sensory room with your donation!
