I teach 2nd grade in an elementary school nestled in the mountains of far Southwest Virginia. We are a very small school, and we serve an area that has a high number of students living in poverty. Many of their parents are not employed.
I want to provide them with some sensory items and create a calm down space in my classroom.
Students often need help getting their emotions back under control when they are frustrated or upset and I want to give them an area to use for this.
My Project
Many students today are dealing with trauma of one type or another. They do not always have the ability to self-regulate their behavior and calm themselves down. I want to create a space for students to use in the classroom filled with items to help students calm themselves. By providing students with some sensory item and activities, this will give them the tools to begin to learn to self calm when in situations that cause them frustration or anger, and help them to learn to channel those feeling differently and react differently to the stimuli that is causing their anxiety.
