Our school serves about six hundred students from a low income area, most of whom receive free or reduced lunch. They rely on our school for access to high quality materials.
My students are hard workers who persevere against the odds.
They attend one of the most rigorous, high-performing high schools and they surpass academic expectations for their demographics. But they're also still kids and they can get stressed out easily. They like to laugh and they like to play. This project will help them make time for more of that.
My Project
Mindfulness in action is easy to spot: watch children doing something they enjoy and you'll see how totally absorbed they can be. Instead of stressing about the future, children are able to live in the moment and enjoy the intrinsic value of play. Unfortunately, by the time they get to high school, many of the young adults I work with have become anxious and overextended.
My school has started a mindfulness class where students can alleviate some of this stress at the end of the day.
In our second year with this elective, returning students are reflecting on their growth while new students are just starting to set goals. We do daily meditations using the Calm Classroom app and these corresponding journals will be treasured by each student.
