That's our mission statement. And I take it seriously. My children come from diverse backgrounds. We are an inclusion classroom so I work with a variety of students with a range of disabilities, including emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder, learning disabilities, and English Language Learners.
My students are more productive, engaged, and happy because they are able to pick seating that best serves them by allowing them to choose a spot to work independently or collaborate with peers.
My Project
Currently there are overhead fluorescent lights in my classroom. The light they provide is too bright and artificial. I try to leave the lights off as much as possible but it is often too dark in the room unless it is a sunny day. These fluorescent light filters are magnetized to cover over the fluorescent light. This creates a much calmer, warmer learning space.
It makes sense that students would learn better in a place where they feel comfortable and valued.
Our classroom is unusually hot and humid throughout the seasons. Keeping the lights off makes the room feel cooler, especially after recess. But then it's not always easy to see what I have written on the board, for example. The filters would provide the light needed while making the room feel cooler.
Besides lighting affecting the students' learning, the use of technology is another critical component in making my students successful citizens of the community. With technology, however, comes noise. At the elementary level, many of the computer programs the children use are in a game format filled with animation and fun sounds. This can create quite a noisy environment. Having the kid-sized headphones will eliminate this problem. Most headphones are too large for my little learners' heads so they end up not using them.
