I am first year teacher at a large Title I school, which means majority of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. We pride ourselves on embracing the diversity in our school community. Our school has over 40 languages and in my class alone I have eight different languages spoken by my students and their families. Some of my students are at the beginning stages of learning English while others are fluent in two or more languages.
My first grade grade students need a calm space that will light up their learning!
Research shows the importance of a calm classroom environment. Lighting plays a major role in setting the tone of the classroom. Studies on florescent lights have shown that these types of work settings can decrease productivity, lower the immune system, and increase stress and anxiety. Students have to spend long hours working very hard in these conditions, covering the florescent lights and adding warm lamps will lessen these effects.
Creating a stress free climate can increase productive learning, and promote greater student achievement.
Establishing a calm setting that does more than benefit the teacher! Help me to turn off the florescent lights so students can turn on their lights!
