Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school family consists of children that range in age from three to five and two teachers. They are eager to learn and come from diverse backgrounds. Even though their backgrounds are diverse, they all have one thing in common and that is that they all qualify for public funded Pre-K. To qualify for this program, their families must meet low income guidelines. Our district is made of up students in which close to 70% meet the national free and reduced lunch guidelines.
In our Pre-K program we focus on social-emotional learning and skill building.
We use the Conscious Discipline methodology. This methodology is based on brain research. Research shows that if a person's brain isn't in a calm state, self-regulation and learning isn't permitted. To be in a calm state, a child must feel connected and safe within their environment. We would like to create a safe place within our classroom where children can go to feel safe and self-regulate their emotions.
My Project
The Conscious Discipline method along with a prepared environment empowers teachers and children to be conscious
of our emotions and the way we handle them.
In Pre-K we focus on providing children the social and emotional skills necessary to manage our thoughts, feeling and actions. We begin this by creating a school family (connection) between ourselves and the students as well as the students with each other. In order for children to reach the optimal brain state for self-regulation and learning, they must feel connected and safe. That is why we need to create an environment in which the children have the tools necessary to do this.
One of the most essential tools within the classroom for self-regulation, is a safe place for children to go when their emotions are high. This can be when they are scared, angry, sad or just want to be left alone They can come to our classroom safe place and a teacher will help them self-regulate. The safe place is more than just the materials I am asking for in this project. It involves connection and collaboration between the teachers and students.
