The students I teach spend their entire day with me and my excellent paraprofessionals in a self-contained Life Skills classroom. We spend so much time together from their first day of high school through their last, we are very much like a family.
My students love reading and rocking in our rocking chair.
They love to spin in our swing and the especially love the days when we cook. One of my students is extremely knowledgeable about animals and another is drawn towards pirate lore. They are sweet individuals who are compassionate. Anytime I sneeze, I have at least one student asking if I am ok.
My Project
The materials in this project will create a calm space for my students to read or to relax without being over stimulated. Many of my students are easily over stimulated and find it difficult to relax. By creating a calm space for them using colors that help to reduce that over stimulation, my students will be able to refocus themselves and return to academic activities.
The paint will cover the walls in the nook.
The light filters will cover the harsh lighting. The hooks will provide storage for comfort materials such as lap blankets and weighted vests that the student can access while in the calming nook.
