Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are sixth graders in a multicultural urban community. We have an extremely limited budget with minimal support from our local government to fund basic supplies.
These students love their neighborhood school because it creates a sense of community.
This is especially important because many of the students come from broken homes. They are excited to learn but often times do not have access to the same materials that other students have from surrounding districts which leaves them at a disadvantage.
My Project
My students are required to read in class every day. After they read, they are required to respond to what they read. They can make predictions, talk about characters, discuss plots, etc. By doing this, students are reflecting on what they have read. This allows students to not just "read", but to "actively read".
This project will make a difference, because it will allow students to read books that they WANT to read.
Since we chose these books together, students are already excited for our new books to arrive. Any time I can get students excited to read, I consider that a huge victory!
