My students need books they can check out in our classroom, that have familiar characters and story plots they enjoy to read at home or in the classroom.
My goal for my students each year comes from a quote by William Butler Yeats, "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire". Each child has their own fire and and helping my students feel successful is a big part of the ignition.
I have served in a Title I school for over twenty years with 100% of the students qualifying for free breakfast and lunch everyday.
My students inspire me everyday with the way they overcome some very difficult situations. Almost all of my students do not have appropriate books to read at home and cannot get to a library on their own. I want to create a library in my classroom that students can check out "just right" books to read at home or in classroom.
My Project
My students are great readers and are always excited when they get to go the the school library to check out a book to bring home or read in the classroom. Recent budget cuts have left us without a media specialist for our library and checking out books has become more difficult. Most of my students do not have appropriate books at home and cannot get to the public library and therefore do not read at home even though they want to. My students need access to great books that they can check out as often as they want to be a remarkable reader.
When you donate these book collections to our classroom, you're giving my students the chance to read as much as they want, as often as they want, where ever they want!
These book series are "kid approved" by my students because they love the characters and have a mixture of fact and fantasy. Reading within a book series helps my students learn how these familiar characters evolve during the different story lines. When they make connections to the characters, my students are more likely to read more books with with these characters in them. This also helps motivate my students to read the next book in the series and facilitate discussion about the characters and events with their classmates. I want to give all my students the resources and the opportunity to enjoy spending time reading books they enjoy.
