This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
At the beginning of each new school year, I am always filled with excitement as I anticipate the sweet new faces that will fill my classroom. Although I find myself missing the class from the previous year tremendously, I have no doubt that I will fall in love all over again with the next group! As a Title I school, with 61% of students on free or reduced lunch, we are one of the most diverse schools in our district.
Because my students come from all different backgrounds, I am constantly searching for strategies and materials to entice ALL students to read more.
One strategy that I have found to most effective is to create a homey, welcoming environment in the designated reading spaces in my room. Everyone loves to curl up with a good book in a comfortable and inviting space. By creating an inviting and visually appealing reading corner, I believe my students will be more likely to visit often, and therefore will be more likely to read often.
My Project
When I look around my classroom, I absolutely love to see students engaged with books. I utilize literacy stations daily, and during that time students are given the opportunity to choose where they would like to read and or write. When students CHOOSE to read, I feel like a Superteacher!! It is my goal, through the use of these materials to encourage this type of eager attitude towards reading.
By purchasing items to better organize my classroom library and clearly display available book series', students will certainly be more motivated to visit the library often.
Over the years, I have been able to build up popular chapter book series' that my students have shown interest in such as The Magic Treehouse, Goosebumps, Junie B. Jones, and more. Through this grant, I can ensure that these books are always visible and organized for my eager readers.
