This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in the inner city in Cleveland Metropolitan School District. My students are in the highest poverty bracket with 100% free breakfast and lunch daily. My students struggle with severe poverty that often causes homelessness, frequent moves, and living with extended family members. Often, my students come to school without proper nourishment, clothing appropriate for the weather, and without school supplies to help them become successful.
My 3rd and 4th grade students come to school eager to learn and enjoy reading.
My students look forward to our daily Accelerated Reading time. During this time my students choose a book within their level to independently read. When the student is done reading they take an online comprehension quiz. The resources I am seeking will continue to foster their love for reading while supporting the science and social students curriculum.
My Project
I am requesting nonfiction books to put in my classroom library. The books will support our Accelerated Reader program as well as support the two core subjects that I will be teaching this school year, science and social studies.
Children love to learn about the world they live in.
Additional nonfiction books will provide that opportunity. I want students to understand that they are apart of the world they are reading about. Perhaps they will be inspired to pursue additional topics in the science field, or become inspired to serve in our community. This could be the start of something big!
