Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As educators, It is important that we keep students engaged, by creating interesting and relevant curriculum. As an alternative high school, our students are over aged and under credited, but they are also rededicated, and refocused, and have reinvested in themselves. I would hate for a lack of appropriate materials to be reason why they stop.
Students need to be engaged, and the content, as well as the class materials, need to be relevant, and up to date, or else students will loose interest.
This year I am teaching my Math class through the lens of sports and games. The class ends with a final project that relates the mathematical concepts learned in class, to a sport or game.
I have a particular group of students that are extremely interested and talented in video gaming. They would like to be able to explore the mathematical ideas behind both creating and playing video games, and submit an original video game, along with a research paper on the relationship between math and video games, as their final math portfolio project towards graduation.
My Project
Having a laptop such as the Acer Predator 15, whose purpose is to enhance the video game experience, will only benefit these students, who are eager and ready to explore and learn the mathematics behind video games. They will be able to apply mathematical functions and learn how to code, and then apply their knowledge in the creation and playing of their video game.
From pixel counts, to algorithms used for programming, to strategies used for playing, their is an abundance of mathematical concepts to be explored and applied in the world of video gaming.
I want to be able to provide them with the best tools to do so.
