Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This year, at our middle school in a low-income area of Los Angeles, we have been trying an exciting new approach to math and science education that integrates Special Day students with the general population for these subjects. Three of us work together to plan lessons, accommodations, and assessments for our students, and we have seen incredible success in both academic and social achievements of the students. Many of our strategies include multi-modal, hands-on activities for all levels of learners. The 6th grade science curriculum, in particular, has provided numerous opportunities to introduce students to geology, biomes, weather, and life cycles in engaging ways. As we bring the school year to a close, we would like to introduce the students to a new level of experiential learning through some of the exhibits and programs at the California Science Center. This would also serve as a reward for their hard work through the (sometimes challenging) inclusion process. The Science Center at USC currently has exhibits and presentations involving ocean life, wind action, nutrition, and numerous other areas we have covered this year as the students have learned the 6th grade standards. We are looking for funding for buses and passes to the IMAX ocean presentation for 50 of our students to give them this opportunity.
