Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Reading is not only the key to opening the door to the imagination but also the key to academic success. The students in my school have multiple challenges when it comes to being successful readers: most of them are second language learners and many of them have limited access to books.
My students attend a K-8 school in a rural area (the nearest high school is 25 miles away).
Most of the students are children of Migrant workers and have very strong family ties. There is a lot of poverty in their community, over 90% of the student population qualifies for free or reduced lunch. They are mostly second language learners who have worked very hard in school to achieve what they have achieved-for the last two years our school has met our No Child Left Behind test result goals. Most of these students love coming to school, and have a great attitude about learning. They are very fond of their teachers- as we are of them.
My Project
"California Reads" is a program I have helped run for the elementary students at my school for a few years now.I have received funding from the kind folks at Chevron through the Chevron Teacher Grants. The program rewards outside reading. Every 15 books or 300 pages of reading comprises a level of reading. Each time a student completes a level, he or she gets a new incentive(the items I've requested here as well as free books and other items) and their progress through the levels is tracked on a sticker chart. The little incentives and charts are very motivating-students will tell me with excitement how close they are to completing the next level of reading. Last year over 150 first through fifth grade students participated in the program-reading a total of thousands of books.
I believe this program which your donations would make possible to continue has encouraged the love of reading in the young students at my school.
I also believe it has had a positive effect on reading comprehension and fluency-skills crucial for success in school as well as in life.
