Teaching calendar and questioning skills is fun! I teach first grade at an equity plus school. We have approximately 75% free- and reduced-lunch and 20% ESL students. Calendar time is a great way to incorporate a lot of skills. Every day we gather around the Calendar board and discuss many different ideas. I bring things over to the area to incorporate from all parts of the room in order to achieve my goals for Calendar. Don't you think it would be much easier to have an all-in-one Calendar Math Board? I think so too!! Number sense and recognition, counting, patterning, estimation, place, value, problem solving, basic operations and Calendar concepts are all part of my daily Calendar time. Well, I lucked out and found a Calendar Math Activity Program that incorporates all of these sills... and it comes as an all-in-one board- How easy and fun it is to prepare for this now!! Another concept that we teach in first grade is collecting data and identifying words and objects. I have found a Question of the Day Chart Kit that comes complete with objects, questions and more to help teach vocabulary, identification, and recording and analyzing data. This would be used as a morning work procedure and discussed later on in the day during math, reading, science or social studies time depending on the content of the quesiton asked. Early in the year we would discuss which has more/less/ equal numbers and counting concepts using the question fo the day. Later we would begin to analyze more in depth and make graphs out of the real life data that we collect from the chart and question. These resources will help teach the necessary skills first graders need to help understand the Calendar and questioning. Thank you for your time in considering these resources for my students. You can help make that difference and touch a child's life in my class!
