My students are passionate, motivated, and caring young people who love to question the world around them and are constantly striving to be the best version of themselves. They take every opportunity to push themselves, and to ensure that they are learning the most that they can.
My students are constantly looking for ways to make their education more meaningful - no problem is too big for them, they are dreamers of the first order.
Their passion and love for learning is an inspiration to me, their community, and anyone fortunate enough to cross paths with them.
We are learners in Milwaukee, WI and a large majority of my students come from low income and immigrant backgrounds. 95% of our students receive free and reduced lunch, and 99% of them are of Hmong descent. Each day I interact with them, they teach me lessons about resilience and culture, and remind me that I want to give them every imaginable opportunity.
My Project
I teach Physical Sciences to 8th and 10th grade students - much of the material we are covering involves breaking down parts of the real world, and then calculating the forces and energy that define our existence. I currently only have access to two calculators that the 25-30 students in my class, at any time, must share.
My students are most passionate about the opportunity to take their classroom learning into the real world around them, but sometimes lack the tools to do so.
Calculating the forces that are all around us, often involves more complex mathematics than pencil and paper allow. Calculators will allow all of my students to have access to rapid numerical analysis of any situation they can dream of - and in so doing expand the boundaries of their creative, scientific thinking.
Additionally, storage is at a premium in my classroom, so a convenient, easily accessible method for storing calculators is essential. The calculator organizer will hang at the front of the classroom, and allow students the freedom to access a calculator whenever they need one. Moreover, I think it will serve as a visual reminder that there is no barrier to the mathematical and scientific creativity they each bring to the class.
