High school students are amazing. This year I am teaching Financial Math and Integrated Math 3 to several diverse groups of 10th-12th graders. Most of my students dream of attending college, and they know that success in math class and on the SAT could be deciding factors in whether that dream becomes a reality.
My Project
Graphing calculators are a required tool in my math classes every year. These powerful tools help my students explore everything from polynomials to mortgage payments. This year very few of my students have purchased the required calculator, due to financial burdens brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. My students have told me they can't afford the calculator because a parent lost their job, or their family is struggling due to increased daycare expenses or even multiple rounds of quarantine due to repeated COVID-19 exposure. I have purchased a few graphing calculators secondhand, but I just don't have enough to meet the needs. Some of these calculators will go to virtual learners in need and the rest will be used in my classroom, where I can disinfect them in between class periods.
Every student should have access to key educational tools.
All my students deserve to learn how to use a graphing calculator and to have the advantage of using one confidently during the SAT. For some of my students that advantage could make the difference in whether they get to attend college or not.
Thank you for recognizing the challenges that my students' families are facing due to the pandemic and helping me get the calculators that my students desperately need.
