I am in the twilight of my teaching career. I have taught at several high schools, elite and average, but my experiences my school are special. These children are exceptional. The majority of my students work jobs to help with family expenses or to provide for themselves. The majority ride a bus to school and back home. A few are athletes and a few are in the band. None of my children consider themselves scholars. And yet they will work diligently to conquer material, to come before or after school for extra help, to attend a Saturday school to review ACT materials. They have been commended for solving over 35,000 math problems correctly on a computer program, putting in over 300 hours of math studies. They bring a smile to my face daily.
Our school is a rural Appalachian high school where the majority of the children are economically disadvantaged.
My earnest hope is that we can secure funds to specifically aid these children to enhance their understanding of mathematics and greatly enhance their opportunities after high school. Help me make mathematics active, energizing and challenging, reflective of student interests and relative to their future careers.
My Project
My children face difficulties daily, working hard to make up the deficiencies in their lives and to satisfy the needs of their family. I work diligently to provide what support I can. Supplies, basic supplies, to be successful in a college-bound mathematics class are a given, that should be easily within a student's grasp. My children need calculators, not the calculators on their cell phones.
My children need updated, state of the art, calculators-Ti-84 CE calculators.
We are using whatever we can get our hands on-aged TI 83 calculators which at the time they were purchased were state of the art. Computers, calculators and cell phones are examples of technology that changes quickly with time. My children deserve the best. I am asking for your help...these kids are worth it!
