Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach sixth, seventh, and eighth grade Special Education students in an inner city neighborhood school in Chicago. The school is in a largely Hispanic area where English is often the second language of the home, poverty level is high, and crime is a significant concern in the community. Resources for books and materials are often limited by a parent's inability to provide more than the essentials.
My students are enrolled in the Special Education Resource Program because each of them has been diagnosed with a disability, including EMH, Autism, and Learning Disabilities. Many of them have difficulty with tasks involving memory and memorization. For this reason, and because they have failed to memorize the multiplication tables, I have worked extensively instructing them in the use of the calculator. The model of calculator we use in school allows them to compute fractions as well as decimal operations, rounding, and the usual calculator functions.
The difficulty arises when I give homework. Since my students don't have the same kind of calculator at home, which allows them to input fractions, they are unable to complete the assignment successfully and practice the skills we work on. I have signed out the school calculators, but if they forget to bring them back, I have nothing to work with in the classroom the following day.
The purpose of this proposal is to acquire additional calculators which will be signed out by my students for use at home and returned at the end of the semester. I currently have 10 students; however, Special Education enrollment frequently fluctuates. I would like to order 15 Texas Instruments TI-15 calculators.
Using these calculators has done so much to improve the self-esteem of my students. They are more willing to offer an answer in front of their non-disabled peers, with more certainty that they will not say something humiliating. It may seem as though I am creating a dependence on technology, but for these struggling students, that is exactly what needs to be done for them to succeed. I hope you will find it in your heart to help my students achieve continued success.
