As we all know, technology is becoming more significant in our daily lives. This is even more so for middle school students. These students are being educated at a time when the need for ?technology literate? students is at an all time high. Consequently, my proposal seeks to obtain Texas Instruments calculators for my students. These calculators will be used by my students as they grapple with problems ranging from simple radicals to probability simulations to quadratic functions.
I teach math to seventh and eighth grade students that are part of the Delta honors program. These students take high school level math classes. Gone are the days when a teacher could sketch a parabola on the blackboard and ask the students to do the same in their notebooks. The technology is now available to allow students to sketch many parabolas in just a few minutes. The beauty of this is that the students are now doing ? not watching. This is when learning takes place.
The Texas Instruments TI-83+ calculator (TI-83+) is probably the most widely used calculator in classrooms all over the country. I would like for all of my students to have one. Many are able to purchase one with the help of their families. This leaves a few students without a ?good? calculator. Needless to say, there are tremendous advantages for students to become familiar with the calculator they will be using in middle school, high school, college, and perhaps graduate school.
My goal this year is to provide assistance to all my students that can not afford a TI-83+ calculator. I am hoping that a generous donor will provide me with the funds necessary to purchase ten TI-83+ calculators.
