Calculators for my Freshman Algebra Class

The cost of three classroom sets of TI-30X IIS Calculators is $829, including shipping and <a target="new" href="" onclick="g_openWindow('', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.

I just completed administering the final exam for my Algebra students for the semester, and I only had three scientific calculators for the students to use. Many of the students at my school live in poverty, and so they do not own one of their own. The cost is relatively low, but they still have trouble purchasing them. I would really like to get a class set of scientific calculators. Our school budget has been short the past few years, so every time I have sent in a requisition, it has been denied. We often end up sharing calculators during a test, but even then, time becomes an issue. I love my kids so much, and I always try to do what I can to make sure they have what they need to succeed in this subject. Many students fear math or just do not like it; having no calculator makes things worse. Scientific calculators are an important tool in an Algebra class because of the different levels of ability I have in each class. Students who are weak in math and have had trouble in the past adding, subtracting, and reducing fractions, are the ones who benefit most - but all of my students would benefit by being able to work more efficiently. Algebra is a time for learning math applications, and those students who never understood the lessons in middle school that revolved around fractions, cannot move forward in Algebra without a scientific calculator. These calculators would allow weak math students to move forward with application problems that contain fractions. The calculators we have used in the past are Texas Instruments TI-30X IIS. A class set would be 30 calculators. These calculators would be used by all three of my classes, and could be used over again for years to come. I have anywhere from 15 to 30 students per class. My students depend on me, as they should, and I want to make sure they get the best education I can provide. Thank you for reading and for your consideration.
