My students need TI-30 calculators to learn to calculate moles more efficiently! This is my first year teaching chemistry, and many of my students don't own their own scientific calculators yet!
My students desire to learn and overcome. They are at an inner-city school in a high poverty district and work hard to learn enough to live out their dreams despite their circumstances. Most of my students have had a very minimal science education prior to high school. Please support them so they can develop a love of science.
Our school is in an inner city area and provides a free college preparatory education with AP curriculum to students.
The student population is formed through a public lottery and every student that applies has had the opportunity to attend. It is ranked among the best schools in the nation. Our school does not receive traditional funds for classroom supplies, and many teachers spend their own money to support classroom needs. We are a family of individuals that spend each day striving to reach our goals and to help the world become a better educated and more pleasant place to live.
My students are hardworking, passionate, and hopeful. They are seeking the opportunity to attend a four-year university and live out their dreams. My students hope to be defined by their work ethic and education instead of their financial circumstances or race.
My Project
This will be my first year teaching chemistry. A big unit for my students will be stoichiometry. Learning to comprehend a mole is a tricky thing, but calculating them can be even harder, especially without a scientific calculator.
The magic number of chemistry: 6.02x10^23 is very hard to calculate without the appropriate technology.
In addition to these calculators, I am requesting a document camera and a lectern, so that I may demonstrate the correct usage on the SmartBoard. This will improve our time spent in class, by cutting down on the individual assistance I need to provide each student with these new devices.
My chemistry students will be preparing to take AP Chemistry as seniors, so it is very important to me that they have a firm foundation of mathematics to build on.
