Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 6th graders in a very impoverished, high-crime area of Santa Rosa in Northern California. My kids are amazing and bright, but do not always have the resources of students in other more economically advantaged schools. The majority of my class speak English as a second language and are able to read and write in both English and Spanish. As my class masters basic computation, they begin to learn to use these basic skills in new and more involved ways. At this point, I let them use calculators as a tool for solving complex geometry, algebra and probability problems. Unfortunately, I have personally only been able to afford a few cheap calculators for my class which break within a few uses. Reliable, more powerful calculators for each of my 32 student would allow them to work through challenging math problems more quickly and accurately. The use of a calculator as a tool not only allows students to work more efficiently, but learn skills that will help them in high school and the work force.
