Calculators are fascinating tools and can be very helpful in the Math classroom. The problem is good calculators are expensive.
Texas Instruments makes a wonderful calculator specifically designed for middle school Math. It is the TI-73 explorer. It can be used for functions from fractions through pre-algebra. Other features it presents are:

A classroom set of these calculators would greatly enhance my students' understanding of difficult concepts, and it will also show them concepts, such as graphing on a calculator, that they will need to use further along in their school careers. Taking the presumption out of simple problems and facilitating them in more difficult problems is a recipe for success in the Math classroom. The added bonus of these calculators is they last a very long time. These will not only benefit my students this year, but students for years to come, helping to impact hundreds even thousands of children.
This past summer I took a class that introduced me to the TI-73 explorer calculator. I thought this would be a very beneficial tool for my 7th grade Math students. This magnificent tool not only will allow me to integrate more technology into my lessons but would provide my students with the opportunity to use more technology in their learning. My students would also benefit from seeing how problems work out on a larger display rather than merely on paper. My school is one that has been impacted by Hurricane Katrina and unfortunately funds are tight. We don't really have the necessary funds to purchase a classroom set of the TI-73 explorer calculators. I believe this will clarify many of the questions they have and also spark some enthusiasm in what can be routine and boring concepts. It is always exciting to see a graph appear across the screen of the calculator. This is also a very good way for them to check their work they do on paper. Thank you for helping us out!
