I teach approximately 60-75 6th grade students each year from varying socioeconomic backgrounds. Our students are very bright and dedicated and love learning new things. Many students that I teach are diagnosed with A.D.D and/or A.D.H.D, which makes providing an ideal learning environment very challenging.
All students, regardless of their socioeconomic background and diagnoses, deserve the best environment to learn.
My students work really hard to excel in all areas of their academic career, and I'd love to provide them with every tool available to help their success.
The leap from 5th grade math to 6th grade math is huge! Students have spent the first 6 years of school proving they know strategies to solve basic math problems, but 6th grade asks them to move away from that.
Students aren't proving they know strategies anymore, they are applying these skills to much harder, real-world situations.
Students are now being asked to solve rates, work with integers, and begin their journey with algebra. These skills are very hard, so we give them access to calculators so they have more time to apply their knowledge instead of spending hours doing long division.
