Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As a public high school, we are judged by our standardized test scores. In Illinois, they have chosen the ACT to be the tool with which we are measured. This is a challenging, nearly 3-hour test designed for college-bound students. At a school where only about 10% of our students go to college, the students often feel unprepared for the ACT. As a junior level math teacher, I see students trying to make sense of complicated math without the basic skills required to understand such concepts. Many of my students do not own calculators and are unable to do simple mathematical operations in their head, especially when negative numbers are involved. This obstacle makes more abstract concepts, such as those on the ACT, nearly impossible. The students would have a better chance of experiencing success on this exam if they owned a calculator that they could use in class and take home to use on assignments. Also, many of my junior level students go on to take higher math classes their senior year, such as College Algebra, Statistics, and Precalculus. Without these basic math skills that many take for granted, having a calculator handy would help these students explore math concepts that are essential not only to the ACT, but also for future math classes.
