Ms. Burr from New Orleans LA is requesting instructional technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need new calculators. They currently are using calculators from years ago, which are now dying from old age. Secondly, the calculators do not have functions like trigonometry or logarithms.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students enter their mathematics classroom each day ready to learn and overcome their obstacles. Our school services about 60 students who reside in a pre-trial detention center. Our school provides a legal service to provide these students education while they await the justice system to take its course. Our school helps the students earn their high school diploma and begin working towards their college degree. The school is a new program and we are still in need of some supplies to provide this legal service.
My students are between the ages of 16 and 21, where most of the students have Individual Education Plans(IEPs).
Each student joins our school with varying educational backgrounds. Some of them have not been in school since they were in 6th grade and some have been in classes with 30+ students. Other students have had teachers who were scared of them or told them they would not succeed. Every student at our school wants to learn, grow, and leave our school with life skills to continue their life journey.
Most of the students have individual educational plans that require the use of a calculator. To properly provide these students with calculators, I need to update the current supply within my classroom. The old calculators are OLD and dying. They also lack key features like trigonometry and logarithms, which are necessary in Geometry and Algebra II.
Specifically, my students will use these calculators on a daily basis.
For example, they will be computing procedural tasks and completing projects based on applications. Furthermore, the new calculator aligns with the given calculators on standardized assessments. Incorporating the new technology will offer clarity, legal services, and hope to students who feel people do not want to invest in them.
