I am a math teacher at Cobble Hill School for American Studies. My students primarily come from low-income families living in the Gowanus and Red Hook housing projects. I have many special education inclusion students in all of my classes, and about 80% of them receive free lunch. Many of my high school math students still struggle with basic arithmetic which makes learning more advanced topics very difficult, and often discourages them from trying. While I make basic skills review part of the course, I also allow the students to use calculators in order to make the more advanced topics more accessible. Many students try harder to learn new material if they know they can use a calculator to get them through the computation. I have a classroom set of graphing calculators for the students to use at school. Unfortunately most students can't afford their own graphing calculator to use at home. I would like to have a set of less expensive scientific calculators that I could check out to my students for the duration of the course. That way they could use it in class and then take it home to use it with homework. I feel that students having their own calculators would encourage them attempt more problems and do their homework more often. It would also allow them to become more familiar with the kind of calculators that they are allowed to use on regents exams. This extra level of comfort will help them be more successful on the math regents. Maybe having their own calculators will make math a little less scary for those students who have not been successful in the past. Who knows, maybe a few students will switch from, "I hate math!" to, "I like my calculator!"
