My Students
I teach Algebra I and Algebra II. The Freshman in Algebra I have to pass an EOC test and on that test they are able to use a graphing calculator. The first week of school when they see all the advanced stuff the calculators can do is really a fun time. They are excited to see the graphs they can make. Some of the pressure of passing the test is reduced when they realize what the calculators can do and how it can assist them.
The Algebra II students are used to the calculators and appreciate the benefit they have to their learning
My Project
The use of calculators will help the students gain knowledge needed to be successful in Algebra. They also build confidence in their ability to problem solve. When the busy work is taken out of the way they can focus on the procedure not the calculations. If I only have a class set of calculators they the students can't take them home to practice on homework. Allowing each student to be issued their own calculator aids in our success. Algebra is the building block for every math class if I can get these students to enjoy math and not fear it then they will be more successful. The use of calculators aids in that success.
