My six Geometry classes consists of a large variety of students with various needs, talents, and personalities. Many of my students face challenges outside of school that directly impact their performance in school. As a teacher at the only Secondary Title 1 School in the county, I too have some challenges of my own that I face day-to-day. Despite the difficulties we may face, I make sure all my students get to experience some of the great aspects of mathematics.
Though it is common for students to give up and shut down at the thought of mathematics, I believe my passion for the subject shows them how great it can be.
I strive to create a safe, positive, and inviting environment for my students to learn and thrive in, no matter the challenge. As a first year teacher, however, I have limited resources. Many of my materials that my students have been using are "leftovers" and often are broken, difficult to use, or incomplete sets. I would love to provide my students with the opportunity to experience mathematics without stressing over inadequate supplies.
My students will be able use scientific calculators to experience a higher level of mathematics. These calculators will replace our current 4-function calculators that have limited my students. This year, students will be learning about trigonometric ratios and their various applications to triangles and circles.
This course, for many, will be the first time students will be using keys other than the basic four, square root, and percent on a calculator.
The exposure and practice of using scientific calculators is not only beneficial for this year of mathematics, but vital for their mathematics and science courses in years to come. These calculators will not only help my students this year, but they will be used every year for all my classes. In addition, students are required to take an end-of-course exam administered by the state which will require the knowledge and use of scientific calculators.
